The different types of fishing lines

There are three types of fishing line; monofilament (mono), fluorocarbon, and braid.

Mono, for short, as people call it, is the most common fishing line used by all. It is both stretchy and strong. Fluorocarbon is a more expensive line and used for more advanced setups. This line is, virtually, invisible under water which could be beneficial to your presentation. Braided line has a much thinner diameter than the other two. This can be beneficial when needing a high poundage line for your setup, however, this line is very visible in the water and does not stretch. This can damage your reel if you are not careful. In my experience, a good value in any fishing line is just to make sure that there are no kinks. Run your finger and thumb through a few feet of the line if there are no kinks, you are good. The kinks weaken the strength of the line. I spoke about the visibility of the lines, some fish don’t care about seeing line like catfish where as others like trout and bass can be finicky when seeing line. A lot of my setups use mono as the main line and fluorocarbon as the leader line. When I am at the Colorado river where there are big fish, I will go with braid as my main line and either mono or fluorocarbon as the leader line. For bass fishing, if I am going straight to my lure, mono is sufficient. Probably would lean towards fluorocarbon in the future.
