The Good Value man’s guide to fishing gear-
Purchasing any inexpensive outfit, from any place, will get you on the fish. This must be stressed in my opinion. Fishing is like cars; a Ford can get you from point A to point B just like a Ferrari can. It is just a matter of how much money do you want to spend. I have a very inexpensive rod/reel that I bought brand new, about twenty years ago, for twenty bucks, and it is my most productive combo I have.
Starting off, you are probably not going to fish for shark or big tuna so, stay away from the big rod/reels or combos. A combo will usually have its own fishing line already on it. Unless you want one that you will place line on later. Standard fishing line on these types of combos are ten-pound line which is fine for whatever fishing you are getting into. I will get into more specifics in another blog.
There are three distinct types of reels, spincast, spinning, and baitcasting. Spincast is for people just starting out. It is easy and simple to use just push the button, cast, and let go of the button and click. Spinning is a great beginner reel too and is simple and easy to use. It is used for long casts, but they are not very accurate. Baitcasting reels are more difficult. It takes a lot of eye-hand coordination, but it can be casted with precision. I prefer the baitcasting reels, but that is just me. I do use the others, but most of the time, I use baitcasting reels. There are two types of fishing you can do, and you can do them at the same time. First fishing with naturals, which is bait and wait presentation with worms or baitfish. This is used if you want to kick back and enjoy life going by. Second, fishing with artificials which are manufactured lures like crankbaits, spinnerbaits, and artificial worms, This is when you work at fishing, cast and retrieve and offer many different multitudes of presentations. Some people will cast out one rod and reel with a natural and bait and wait then, when close by, cast and retrieve an artificial however you must have a two rod stamp with your fishing license in order to do this. I found the best way of doing this is having a spinning combo casted out with a live worm and then a spinning or baitcasting combo casting and retrieving an artificial lure. Stay close to your bait and wait set up in case you have a bite. This example keeps you busy and you can start and stop anytime you want.
