Newport Harbor Castaways Park part 1

Newport harbor has not been on my fishing radar, but it is very close to where I live. I am a freshwater guy but will dabble in the salt from time to time. A lot of my friends have said that Newport harbor is a great fishery so, I had to try it myself. Newport harbor or NPH is located just at the end of 55 fwy in Orange County. It is very conveniently located. I have done my research by viewing and writing back and forth on Newport harbor websites. I came across Castaways Park, and it is perfect for kayak fishing. Easy to launch. However the rules are specific, no fishing until you get underneath the bridge going south into Newport harbor. The water holds many different species like bass, halibut, guitarfish, croaker, bat rays, and leopard sharks. Watch out for boaters, they seem to be everywhere. My best advice is go early and, on a weekday, if you can. No boat fees, no launch fees, no fishing permits needed. You just need your California fishing license and your saltwater stamp. This is a good value for anyone.

Stay tuned for part 2, my report….
