There are two different types of baits in fishing. One is called ‘naturals’ which are alive or dead and the other is ‘artificials’ which are manufactured.
Naturals are fish or shellfish like sardines, anchovies, mackerel and shrimp. Worms are included in this category as well as squid. The other type of bait is artificials. There are a lot of different artificial baits out there and they do come in two subcategories, finesse and reaction baits. Finesse baits are manufactured worms that are made to move like worms, or you move them yourself through your rod and line in the water. This is a slow presentation and takes patience. Reaction baits are fast moving baits. Cast and retrieve fast or a variance of speed. The more common ones are used for Largemouth bass in freshwater fishing. Bass fishing is a big industry and people make a lot of money fishing professionally in it. Some examples are crankbaits, jerkbaits, buzzbaits, and spinnerbaits. They each have their own way of moving in the water.
The universal natural bait or the ‘go-to bait’ for freshwater is nightcrawler worms and for saltwater it is squid. These two baits, any fish will take. You get these from any tackle shop or sporting goods store.
I will be getting into specifics in future blogs on these baits. Below are pics of different baits-
